Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama’s relationship was always controversial, due to their 12-year age gap. And it seems like the “Confident” singer has finally addressed the issue in her new song, “Still Have Me.” In the track, which was released on Thursday (September 24), Lovato seemingly slams her ex for breaking her heart. “You took my hope, my faith / You left me without a trace / But I still have me,” she sings.
Lovato also appears to reference Valderrama’s infidelity in the song, singing, “You tore me down / But I survived.” The lyrics come after Lovato and Valderrama announced their split in June, after six years together. Though the pair have remained on good terms, Lovato has been open about the struggles she faced during their relationship.
In her 2017 documentary, Simply Complicated, Lovato revealed that she struggled with jealousy and insecurity while dating Valderrama. “When I was in a relationship with Wilmer, I always kept my guard up,” she said. “I knew that he was seeing other girls.” “I had this sense of security by being the age that I was and being able to say, ‘He’s mine,'” Lovato continued. “But looking back, I feel like there were times when I wasn’t being completely honest with myself.” It’s unclear if Lovato is directly referencing her relationship with Valderrama in “Still Have Me,” but the lyrics certainly seem to suggest that she is.
Whether or not the song is about her ex, it’s clear that Lovato is doing better than ever. In August, she celebrated four years of sobriety, and earlier this month, she made her triumphant return to the stage at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards.
Though Lovato and Valderrama’s relationship may be over, it’s clear that the “Skyscraper” singer is in a good place and is ready to move on.
