After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, Olivia Newton-John spent the next three decades fighting the disease.
The Australian singer and actress was first treated with a lumpectomy and six months of chemotherapy. In 1997, she underwent a mastectomy after the cancer returned.
For the next 20 years, Newton-John remained cancer-free. But in 2017, she revealed that the disease had returned and this time it had spread to her shoulder.
Newton-John is now using alternative treatments, including medical marijuana, to help manage her pain. She is also staying positive and has said that she is “grateful” for every day.
In an interview with “60 Minutes Australia,” Newton-John said she is “not afraid” of cancer and is determined to fight it.
“I think if you focus on the negative, you will get more of the negative,” she said. “So I choose to focus on the positive.” Newton-John’s battle with cancer has inspired her to use her voice to raise awareness about the disease. She has launched a foundation, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, which is dedicated to finding new ways to prevent and treat cancer.
“I want to be an example of someone who lives life to the fullest, even with cancer,” she said.
Newton-John’s story is a reminder that cancer can be beat. With the right treatment and a positive outlook, anyone can fight this disease.
